Okay, so seeing monkeys in a forest in Bali sounds amazing right? Well, let me tell you, it was kind of creepy and a little alarming. We went to the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud one afternoon. There are monkeys everywhere. Hanging and swinging in trees. Sitting on the stone walls that line the stone pathway. Everywhere. At the entrance there were even monkeys sitting on the roofs of buildings! Also by the entrance are banana vendors. Of course lots of people want to feed a monkey right? Well I decided against it, remembering that woman in the US who was mauled by an orangutan and had to have facial reconstructive surgery. Yes, I will keep my distance.
The Sacred Monkey Forest is a nature reserve and temple complex, which houses about 340 Macaque monkeys. The monkeys literally just hang out. There are employees who walk around and give out potatoes, coconut, and other food to the monkeys. And of course the bananas that tourists can give to them. I was talking to one of the employees and I asked him if the monkeys attack people. His response,
"oh yes, but not often."
Here are some photos! Some of the monkeys were cute, but a lot of them were aggressive and would climb on people to grab for food, and would pull on dresses and shirts! It was crazy.
